The Palencia Model Forest Project was presented on Tuesday, September 17, alongside 17 other initiatives funded by the Biodiversity Foundation of Spain's Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, which manages the EU Next Generation funds.
The event provided significant visibility and facilitated valuable networking opportunities, allowing the team to explore synergies with other regional projects and gather innovative ideas.
Eladio Ruiz de Navamuel, Coordinator of Technical Services at the Provincial Council of Palencia, led the presentation of the Palencia Model Forest Project. He introduced the audience to the unique characteristics of the project area, which spans approximately 4,000 km² with a low population density of around 10 inhabitants per km². Historically marked by agricultural activity and extensive livestock farming, the landscape has undergone significant changes following the decline of these practices. Now, it features a diverse natural vegetation and a wooded landscape, thanks to reforestation efforts by various forestry administrations. Species such as Quercus pirenaica, Scots pine, and laricio pine are prevalent, along with a notable presence of poplar cultivation, an activity closely tied to local communities and forest owners.
The Palencia Model Forest Project aims to revitalize the region and its natural and forest resources by engaging local councils and other social stakeholders. The project focuses on promoting innovative forest management practices and enhancing the involvement of local authorities in forest fire prevention through the development of municipal fire prevention plans.
The event also marked the launch of the project's official social media channels on Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter). Follow them for updates and more information!
