Fall news from the Provence Model Forest!
Fall is always a season full of activities in the territories of the Provence Model Forest, here some highlights.
The 2025 Quercus Suber contest by Provence Model Forest has launched, inviting innovative projects focused on the sustainable management of cork oak forests. Open to individuals, organizations, and public entities, the contest aims to enhance biodiversity, improve forest management, and boost local economies. Winners will receive recognition and support to implement their initiatives.
The Brignoles mobile sawmill, part of the Farfadets Wood initiative, is in jeopardy after suffering a theft last July. This sawmill has been essential for promoting local wood use and sustainability in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. To recover from this setback, a crowdfunding campaign has been launched to raise funds for a new sawmill.
The Weekend of Cork Oak will take place on October 19 at the remarkable Domaine de Baudouvin in La Valette-du-Var. Organized by Forêt Modèle de Provence, this event aims to celebrate the cultural and economic importance of cork oak. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, including local markets, exhibitions, workshops, and conferences featuring experts in the field. The event seeks to revitalize interest in cork oak and promote sustainable practices in the region. |

Palencia Model Forest Project showcased among biodiversity initiatives of Spain
On September 17, the Palencia Model Forest Project was introduced alongside 17 other initiatives funded by Spain’s Biodiversity Foundation, part of the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge. This event enhanced visibility and enabled the team to connect with other regional projects and exchange ideas.
Eladio Ruiz de Navamuel, Coordinator of Technical Services at the Provincial Council of Palencia, showcased the project’s efforts to revitalize a 4,000 km² area with a population density of about 10 inhabitants per km². The landscape, transformed from agricultural and livestock farming, now features diverse vegetation and reforested areas, including Quercus pirenaica and various pines. The project aims to activate natural resources, promote sustainable forest management, and support fire prevention. |
