For over ten years, the Castilla y Leon Region (Spain), also making use of the contribution of the CESEFOR Foundation, has dealt with the management of the MMFN secretariat.
In 2019, on the occasion of the MedForum held at the same time as the 6th Mediterranean Forest Week, there was a handover and the Secretariat of the Mediterranean Network is now hosted by the Tuscany Region (Italy) which, for this task, organized itself with internal governance which includes: the Union of Municipalities Valdarno and Valdisieve, always at the forefront for the dissemination of the Model Forest concept, and the Montagne Fiorentine Model Forest (even before and the only Italian Model Forest) as a virtuous example and as a support through its members for design and dissemination activities.
During the next 5 years (term of office) it will be the task of the Tuscany Region and the Team, to maintain relations with the IMFN (International Model Forest Network) and to strengthen relations with the Regional Networks, in particular with the Northern European one, also with the prospect to develop bottom-up projects and access possible European funding.
It will be the responsibility of the Secretariat to promote and disseminate the principles of the Model Forest, also by supporting both the emerging Model Forests of the Mediterranean area and those already existing, in their territorial development paths.
As a result of the objectives established by the Secretariat, the need to renew communication arose. For this activity the Secretariat relied on Compagnia delle Foreste, founding member of the Montagne Fiorentine Model Forest, which has been dealing with communication in the field of forests, environment and sustainability since 1995.
The first step in the renewal of the communication channels was the restyling of the website, which now has a completely new look. This was built with the aim of being a platform to encourage the exchange of Good Practices, collaborations, information and news both between the various Model Forests belonging to the International Network and with the Institutions.
The new secretariat, in the next few years, will therefore have the mission to animate, coordinate and develop the Mediterranean Model Forest Network and to make them communicate with each other and with the international network. A leading, support and coordinating role to further promote the concept of sustainability, both locally and globally.
